Couples Coaching vs. Couples Therapy—What’s the Difference?

When most people decide they need help, they search for “couples therapy” or “couples counseling near me.” But for the majority of couples—those dealing with communication breakdowns, recurring arguments, or a growing distance—what they actually need isn’t therapy. It’s coaching.

The distinction matters, and understanding it can save you months of frustration.

Couples Coaching
Couples Therapy / Counseling
Forward focused—builds skills for the future
Past focused—explores the roots of current pain
Tool based—you leave each session with something to practice
Insight based—focused on understanding patterns
Action oriented—structured, goal-driven sessions
Process oriented—open-ended exploration
No diagnosis required—works for any couple ready to improve
Often framed around emotional or psychological diagnosis
Faster results—most couples see change within weeks
Longer timelines—often months or years
Coaching doesn’t mean your problems aren’t serious. It means you’re ready to do something about them—practically, directly, and without spending years on a therapist’s couch.

What Couples Coaching Can Help With

Every couple is different, and every coaching program is tailored to your specific situation. Most couples who come to Life Coaching Masters (marriageaide.com) are dealing with one or more of the following:

🔇

Communication Breakdown

Conversations that go nowhere, or escalate into arguments. Feeling unheard, dismissed, or constantly misunderstood by the person you love most.
🔁

Recurring Arguments

The same fights, over and over. Different trigger, same pattern. Coaching breaks the cycle by changing how you engage—not just what you fight about.
📏

Growing Apart

Life got busy. You’re co-existing instead of connecting. Coaching helps couples rediscover each other and rebuild the closeness that brought them together in the first place.
🔧

Rebuilding Trust

Whether from infidelity, broken promises, or years of unresolved hurt—trust can be rebuilt with the right tools and a structured path forward.
🌊

Life Transitions

New baby, job change, blended family, major loss. Transitions stress even strong relationships. Coaching helps you navigate them as a team.
💡

Proactive Strengthening

Some couples come in not because things are bad—but because they want to be great.

The Process: What to Expect

Getting started is simple. Here’s how it works from your first call to your final session:

Free Phone Consultation

Call us at (661) 374-3790. Our Helpline Specialist will answer your initial questions, listen to what’s going on, and determine whether couples coaching is right for you. There’s no pressure and no obligation—just an honest conversation.

In-Person Consultation—$50

Your first paid session is a face-to-face consultation with Daphna, in our Bakersfield office or by video call (if you’re remote). The purpose of the consultation is to get acquainted, understand your specific situation in depth, and make sure you feel comfortable with us.

Daphna will then recommend a coaching package tailored to your needs—but only if she feels she can help you. We don’t accept people we think we can’t help, because we don’t like to see a waste of time and money.

Choose a package that fits your timeline and goals. All sessions are private, personalized, and focused on giving you practical tools you can use immediately.

Why Coaching Works When Other Approaches Haven’t

If you’ve already tried talking it out on your own, reading relationship books, or even a round of couples therapy—and things still aren’t where you want them—you’re not alone. Here’s why coaching produces results where other approaches stall:

It gives you tools, not just insight

Understanding why you fight doesn’t stop you from fighting. Coaching changes what you actually do—the words, the timing, the approach.

It’s structured and goal driven.

Every session moves toward something specific. You’re not just talking—you’re progressing.

It meets you where you are.

Daphna tailors every program to your relationship, your personalities, and your goals. There’s no one-size-fits-all curriculum.

It works fast.

Most couples notice real change within the first few sessions—not months down the road.

The skills stay with you.

What you learn in coaching doesn’t expire. You’ll have a shared language and framework that keeps working long after your last session.

What Couples Are Saying

Real results from real couples who were exactly where you might be right now.
Candice & Shane - Marriage Aide - Marriage Coaching
“She saved my marriage. She gave us the tools and the mindset to succeed. She helped us figure it out. My husband and I were on the brink of divorce. We were struggling with infidelity and trust issues… We both are so grateful. I feel like we are communicating better and trusting each other again.”

— Candice & Shane

Corrine & Jason - Marriage Aide - Marriage Coaching
“She helped us realize our main issues and made us set weekly goals to strengthen our marriage back to where it used to be. Without her, we probably would not be together now. We only saw her for about two months, and are leaving happier and full of more promise for our future.”

— Corrine & Jason

Gerardo & Leilani - Marriage Aide - Marriage Coaching
“Coming here was the best choice I’ve made. Don’t fight it, man. Go. It took my marriage reaching a dangerously-low point to finally agree to come. Little did I know, agreeing to come was one of the first positive choices I’ve made.”

— Gerardo (Leilani & Gerardo)

Jasmine & Eddie - Marriage Aide - Marriage Coaching
“Since our first session, Daphna helped us communicate much better, understand each other much better, and work together to solve our issues. Our relationship, love life, and just the time we spend together have become much easier.”

— Eddie (Jasmine & Eddie)

Frequently Asked Questions

Couples coaching is a practical, forward-focused process that gives partners concrete tools to communicate better, resolve conflict constructively, and rebuild connection. Unlike couples therapy, which explores the emotional roots of past experiences, coaching focuses on skills and strategies you can use starting now.

Couples therapy typically involves a licensed therapist who helps partners process emotions, explore past trauma, and diagnose underlying psychological patterns. Couples coaching is skill based and future focused—it teaches you what to do differently, not just why you ended up here. Many couples find coaching more actionable and faster moving than traditional therapy.

Most couples see meaningful progress within 6–12 sessions. After a $50 in-person consultation, Daphna will recommend a package tailored to your situation. Packages start at 4 sessions ($650) and go up to 12 sessions ($1,800). A free phone consultation is always the first step.
